Best Selling Studio Monitors in 2017

Studio monitors are an extremely important tool in a professional or home studio. Every studio pro knows the important role that monitoring speakers play—they can either make or break your mix.  We have reviewed lots of monitors and have our view on which ones are the best, but we also wanted to know which studio monitors people are actually buying.

Finding the best selling product isn’t always an easy thing to find out, as manufacturer’s generally don’t want their competition to get hold of their sales data.  However, we can look at information from retailers to get a feel for which products are popular.  The US Commerce Department recently reported that Amazon accounts for 54% of all online sales, so this seems like a sensible place to start our research.  The other great thing about Amazon is it actually publishes the rank of each of its products based on sales volume.  Hence, they’ve done a lot of our work for us in ranking products within categories.  However, Amazon ranks products not only by make/model, but also by retailer, so this means that the same product is often ranked many times.  We’ve also considered the best sellers reported from other online retailers.  Taking all of this into consideration, we’ve come up with a list of what we believe is the best selling studio speakers. This research is current at the time of writing (March 2017), if you’d like to see the top sellers on Amazon today, you can checkout their best seller page here.

List of the Best Selling Studio Monitors

Mackie CR Series

Mackie CR3 Best Selling Studio Monitor

Mackie studio monitors are very well represented for in the top 20 rank on Amazon.  The Mackie CR3s are ranked the #1 best seller, and the slightly more expensive Mackie CR4s and CR5s also take the rankings of #7, #8 and #9 in the list of the top 20 best sellers.  While these have been listed in the studio monitors category on Amazon, Mackie themselves actually call these “Multimedia Speakers”. The CR3 speakers provide excellent value for money as a glorified computer speaker, but are not really suitable for serious studio monitor duties.  We’ve chosen to include them here as they are just so popular and they have at least some crossover into the home studio market (or perhaps the aspiring home studio market).

KRK Rokit 5 G3

KRK Rokit 5 G3 Monitoring Speaker Review

The KRK Rokit 5 G3 takes the title for the number one best-selling real studio monitor.  On Amazon’s top 20 ranked sellers, the KRK takes three spots including #2, #18 and #19.  These are also listed on the Sweetwater Sound website as a top seller, so it is not just Amazon who have recognised this speaker’s popularity.   It’s also worth noting that these speakers are one of the most expensive speakers in the top 20 (more than double the price of most other speakers in the top 20), so users are clearly seeing the value of these speakers and are choosing to buy the more expensive Rokits in place of much cheaper studio monitor options.

M-Audio AV32

M-Audio AV32 Best Selling Studio Monitor

These compact monitors are popular among home studios; they’re ranked #3 and #12 in the top 20 on Amazon and are also ranked as one of the most popular on Sweetwater. They sound better than some of their counterparts, but unfortunately they aren’t very loud and they start sounding terrible when you crank up the volume a little.   However, they are very inexpensive and cost less than half of the price of the higher ranking KRKs.

You can check them out on Amazon.

PreSonus Eris E4.5

PreSonus Eris 45 Top selling Studio Monitor

These monitors are also popular budget offerings and are ranked at #5 on Amazon’s list.  These monitors are more expensive than many of the other budget offerings, and have a following of happy users.  The PreSonus product range is in general a strong seller.

You can check them out on Amazon.

Rockville ASM5

Rockville ASM5 Best Selling Studio Monitor

It’s quite intriguing that a monitor like the Rockville ASM5 takes the #6 ranking despite having a weak online presence in comparison to many of the better known brands. There isn’t much information about it and there is very little mentioned in forums or top review sites. However, many happy customers have expressed their satisfaction with this monitor on Amazon. Some have also expressed their disappointment, but it should be noted that the ASM5 is one of the cheaper alternatives on the market.

You can check them out on Amazon.

Yamaha HS8

Yamaha are famous for producing the industry standard NS10 which pretty much created the category of low-cost nearfield studio monitoring, and so it’s no surprise that they appear in the top 20 list with their latest models. Ranked at #10, they are more than double the price of the Rokits 5s yet are still one of Amazon’s best sellers.   Yamaha have truly created a special monitor to achieve this.

JBL LSR 305

JBL LSR 305 Studio Monitor Speaker Review

Another very popular budget speaker, the JBL LSR305 represents excellent value for money and comes in at #13 on Amazon, as well as being listed as a best seller on Sweetwater Sound’s site.   These are a reasonable alternative for the KRKs and are at a similar price point.

You can read our review of the JBL LSR 305s, or check them out on Amazon.

Behringer MS16

Behringer MS16 Best Selling Studio Monitor

These studio desktop monitors are marketed towards those who have a tiny home studio and people who want to use their studio speakers as computer speakers. Their low price is very enticing, getting it a rank of #15 on Amazon’s best seller list, but there have been many complaints about their sound and performance.

You can check them out on Amazon.

IK Multimedia iLoud Micro Monitors

IK Multimedia iLoud Micro Monitors Best Selling Studio Speakers

Another model that is not well known is the IK Multimedia iLoud Micro Monitors, ranked at #16 on Amazon.  Sweetwater Sound also have these listed as a top seller.  Their selling point is their portability, and many claim that these monitors perform well for their size. While they don’t offer the advantages of larger monitors, they’re still a great alternative when you’re on the go or simply don’t have the space.  They are also one of the more expensive monitors on this list, priced very similarly to the KRKs.

You can check them out on Amazon.

What Else Makes Amazon’s Top 100 Selling Studio Monitors?

If we breeze through the remainder of the Amazon top 100 best sellers, all the previously mentioned monitors make multiple additional mentions from different vendors, as do different size versions of the same brands listed above.  As an example, the KRK RP6G3 (the 6″ version of the RP5G3s) come in at #22, the Yamaha HS7s (one of our favourites) come in at #24.  the M-Audio BX5 Carbons makes its first mention at #23.   The KRK VXT series sees it’s only mention in the top 100 in position 61 with the VXT 4s.

In terms of frequency, we see the Yamaha HS Series 12 times, KRK Rokit series 8 times, Mackie CR series 8 times, Presonus speakers 8 times, M-audios 6 times, JBL LSRs 4 times. The IK Multimedia monitors have only one listing in the top 100, which is probably a reflection of their less popular brand status.   Once again, we see the strong popularity of the KRKs and Yamahas, despite being amongst the more expensive choices in Amazon’s best seller list.

What About All The Other Pro Studio Monitors?

As you would expect, higher priced monitors don’t sell as well as the lower priced models.  Also, it’s likely that studio professionals are purchasing high-end studio monitors from their local store or sales representative, and hence aren’t buying on Amazon.  However, we may still be able to get a feel for their relative popularity based on their Amazon rankings.

The Focal Alpha 80s, which are more than triple the price of the KRK Rokit series,  coming in at 88th place and make the Top 100.  One of our favourites of the KRK studio monitor line-up, the VXT6s, were best ranked at #255.

Genelec studio monitors, typically priced at ~5 times that of the KRK Rokit 5s, came in at #389 for the M030 and #456 for the M040s.  The similarly priced Adam A7xs are better sellers, coming in at #166, and the Neuman KH120 sits somewhere between the two in terms of popularity (although difficult to tell because it is listed in a different category to the other speakers).

In terms of the larger dual-bass speakers, the Adam A77x came in at a surprisingly popular #211 considering its premium price tag.  The Focal Twin 6 Be speakers were presented in a different category to all the other studio monitors so it is difficult to understand how popular it is through Amazon, however Focal claim it is their best selling speaker and Sweetwater call this one of their best sellers, so it is  likely to sell in decent quantities for a monitor of its price.

Popular Studio Monitors in the UK

So far we’ve focused on Amazon USA, and things are a little different in the UK.  The best selling monitors in the UK are dominated by M-Audio, with the Av32, Av42, and BX5 taking the first three rankings, before the Mackie CR series.  The Rokit series is also there, taking out 5 positions in the top 20.  Interestingly, the Adam A7X is ranked #15, which is very impressive for a premium priced monitor.    The Yamaha HS series makes an appearance at rank #30, and the JBLs LSR series gets it highest rank in position #62.  The genelec M40s also make it into the top 100.

Conclusion

Amazon provides a lot of information to help us figure out which studio monitors are the best selling .  From our results it’s clear the Mackie CR series dominates the low-priced end of the market, although it is generally accepted that these are not really suitable for serious studio usage.  The most popular of the entry-level quality studio monitors is clearly the KRK Rokit series, with the Rokit 5 being the best seller, all representing excellent value for money.  The Yamaha HS7  provides the next step up in quality, but at around three times the price of the KRKs, and is the next best seller.  We don’t really expect that the more expensive and premium studio monitors would sell in high volumes on Amazon, and this is what we found, although the Adam speakers (particularly the A7X) appeared to be the best sellers of this bunch.

Some of the entries on this list surprised us, especially some of the lesser-known brands that sold very well.  Most good quality monitors are simply too pricey for the majority of consumers, and so most settle for less expensive alternatives. It’s also possible that some of the best monitors just happen to be more popular on other online stores, or maybe they sell more through brick-and-mortar shops.

Whatever the case may be, it is important to note that just because a product is one of the most popular on the market doesn’t mean that it’s one of the best, nor does it mean that it’s right for you. It’s nice to know which studio monitors people are buying in 2017 to get an idea of what your options are, but you should definitely consider all factors (or see our thoughts here) if you are thinking about making a purchasing decision.
